Meet the Parents

My PJM piece this week is on parental responsibility, a topic that is often overlooked in discussions about educational reform.

For a great companion read, check out this piece in City Journal about broken homes in Newark.

I have a third grader and a kindergartner and I see this all the time. In my view it's a lack of accountability or consequences for these kids' actions. The school is the worst place. I have to constantly stay on top of their behavior at school so I can make sure they know what the consequences are. Every time I hear them say "your son/daughter did X today..." I immediately follow it up with "what consequence did she have to face as a result of that?" and they just give me blank stares.
